In 1850 G. Callicounis established in Kalamata of Messinia the first steam powered distillery equipment with the best known machinery at the time.
With studies of chemistry in Triesto and combining with imagination and knowledge a big variety of aromatic plants, roots and fruits from the vast vegetation of Southern Greece, George Callicounis performed the creation of Distillates and extracts with original subtle tastes and flavours.

In 1890 begins the triumphal presence in the International Markets and expositions. 46 gold metals, Diplomas of Honour and distinctions gained into fairs from Paris to Marseille and to San Francisco of USA, are all the living evidence of the superiority and high quality of CALLICOUNIS products. In 1900 the Distillery participates to the big international exhibition in Paris EXPOSITION MONDIALE and gains the first class gold medal for the Liqueurs and Brandy.
